Insurance Information

What you should know about insurance before you list or book in New Zealand.

Important Notice

The information on this page is general in nature and does not constitute financial advice under the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013 (FMCA), as amended by the Financial Services Legislation Amendment Act 2019 (FSLAA). StorageFinder is not licensed as a Financial Advice Provider (FAP) under the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) and does not provide, arrange, or recommend specific insurance products. You should consider your own circumstances and seek advice from a licensed Financial Advice Provider or insurance broker before making insurance decisions. Both Hosts and Storers are responsible for maintaining their own appropriate insurance.

Booking Support, Included With Every Booking

Every booking on StorageFinder includes Booking Support. If damage or theft is verified during your booking period, we may reimburse up to NZD $1,100 of your documented out-of-pocket costs. This is a discretionary goodwill commitment, not insurance.

What it may cover

  • Documented repair or replacement costs
  • Insurance excess or deductible payments
  • Other verified out-of-pocket expenses

What it doesn't cover

  • Wear, rust, mould, vermin, or gradual deterioration
  • Damage outside the booking period
  • Pre-existing damage
  • Items not disclosed at the time of booking
  • Civil unrest, natural disaster, or force majeure

Booking Support is a discretionary goodwill commitment by StorageFinder. It is not insurance and does not replace your own insurance. StorageFinder may decline any request at its sole discretion. This is not a contract of insurance as defined by the Insurance (Prudential Supervision) Act 2010.

For Hosts

As a Host, you should ensure you have adequate insurance to cover your property and any liability that may arise from storing third-party vehicles and equipment on your premises. Consider the following:

  • Does your public liability insurance cover visitors and their property on your site?
  • Does your house and contents or landlord insurance cover land used for third-party storage?
  • Notify your insurer that you are earning income from vehicle or equipment storage. Most standard policies exclude commercial activity
  • Ask whether combined liability or business interruption cover is appropriate if you run storage at any scale
  • Confirm the policy covers events at the storage space such as fire, flood, storm, and vandalism by third parties

For Storers (Vehicle Owners)

As a Storer, you should maintain insurance on your vehicle or equipment even while it is in storage. Recommendations include:

  • Check whether your comprehensive vehicle insurance covers theft, fire, flood, and storm damage while your vehicle is stored at a third-party location
  • Confirm with your insurer that the policy applies while the vehicle is at a private address (not your own property)
  • For unregistered trailers, caravans, or watercraft, ask your insurer about agreed-value or stored-vehicle-specific cover
  • Use the Handover feature to document the condition of your vehicle on arrival and departure. Photos support claims
  • Keep a copy of your Certificate of Insurance accessible during the storage period
