Edinburgh is a beautiful city, but it was not designed for cars. Georgian crescents, narrow cobbled lanes and tenement blocks mean most residents have no garage and limited on-street parking. If you own a second car, a classic car or a vehicle you do not use daily, finding storage in and around Edinburgh is a real consideration.

This guide covers car storage options across Edinburgh and central Scotland, what they cost in 2026, and where to look by area.

Why car storage in Edinburgh is in demand

Edinburgh's housing stock creates a natural storage problem. The city is dominated by tenement flats, Georgian terraces and Victorian villas, most of which predate the car entirely.

Limited residential parking. Most Edinburgh residents rely on on-street parking with resident permits. There are no garages attached to tenement flats, and many houses have small or no driveways.

Controlled Parking Zones. Edinburgh Council operates extensive CPZs across the city centre, Leith, Morningside, Stockbridge and other inner suburbs. Second vehicles, classic cars and project cars compete for limited permit spaces.

Street parking risks. On-street parking in Edinburgh exposes cars to weather, road salt in winter, accidental damage and theft. For classic or high-value cars, this is not acceptable.

Seasonal storage. Edinburgh's large festival population and tourism industry mean some residents leave for weeks at a time. Others store a summer car through the Scottish winter.

Car storage options by area

Central Edinburgh

Garage and lock-up storage within the city centre is rare and expensive. A few private garages in areas like Stockbridge, Dean Village and Comely Bank come up for rent, but they are snapped up quickly.

Mews garages in the New Town are the most desirable option but among the most expensive in Scotland. They suit classic car owners and those willing to pay for convenience.

Typical cost: Garage £150–£250 per month. Covered lock-up £120–£200 per month.

Leith and North Edinburgh

Leith has a mix of industrial and residential areas with some storage potential. Bonnington, Newhaven and Granton have pockets of industrial space where car storage occasionally becomes available.

The regeneration of Leith's waterfront has reduced available industrial land, but some units remain. North Edinburgh, towards Pilton and Muirhouse, has more options.

Typical cost: Garage £100–£180 per month. Outdoor compound £60–£100 per month.

Musselburgh and East Lothian

Just east of Edinburgh, Musselburgh and the East Lothian towns (Prestonpans, Tranent, Haddington) offer more availability and lower prices. The area is well-connected by the A1 and has a mix of residential and rural properties with storage potential.

Farm buildings and rural garages in East Lothian suit classic car owners looking for dry, secure storage at a reasonable price.

Typical cost: Garage £80–£150 per month. Barn/covered £70–£120 per month.

Livingston and West Lothian

Livingston is a new town with good road links to Edinburgh via the M8. It has more industrial and commercial space than Edinburgh itself, and car storage options are generally cheaper.

Bathgate, Broxburn and the surrounding areas have established industrial estates where lock-up units and garages are available.

Typical cost: Garage £70–£130 per month. Outdoor compound £50–£80 per month.

Falkirk and the Forth Valley

Falkirk and the Forth Valley area offer some of the most affordable car storage accessible from Edinburgh. The M9 provides a direct route, and the area has a good mix of industrial and rural properties.

Grangemouth, Larbert and Denny have yards and lock-ups suited to vehicle storage. The area also serves car owners from Stirling and the wider central belt.

Typical cost: Garage £60–£120 per month. Outdoor compound £40–£75 per month.

Storing a car in West Lothian or Falkirk typically saves £40–£80 per month compared to central Edinburgh. If you only access the car occasionally, the 30-minute drive is an easy trade-off.

DVLA and SORN requirements

If you are storing a car that will not be driven on public roads, you need to know about SORN.

SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification): If your car is not taxed, insured or MOT'd for road use, you must declare a SORN with the DVLA. This is free and can be done online.

Where you store matters. A SORNed vehicle must be kept on private land. It cannot sit on any public road, even with a resident permit. A garage, driveway, storage yard or private car park all qualify.

MOT and tax. A SORNed car does not need road tax or a valid MOT. But if you want to drive it to an MOT station, you can do so without tax, as long as you have a pre-booked appointment.

If you SORN your car, make sure it is on private land. Edinburgh Council can fine and potentially remove SORNed vehicles found on public roads.

What to look for in Edinburgh car storage

Dry conditions. Edinburgh is exposed to North Sea weather. Damp, salt-laden air accelerates rust. Enclosed, dry storage is worth the extra cost for any car you care about.

Security. Lock-up garages with individual keys or codes. For compounds, look for CCTV, fencing and gated access.

Ventilation. Enclosed storage needs airflow. A sealed garage without ventilation traps moisture, which is almost as bad as storing outdoors. Look for vents or fans.

Access. Check that you can drive the car in and out safely. Some older garages have very narrow openings, tight turns or low clearances.

Battery maintenance. If power is available, a trickle charger keeps the battery healthy during long-term storage. Ask whether electricity is included.

Private car storage in Edinburgh

Not all car storage is commercial. Many Edinburgh residents and rural property owners in the surrounding areas have spare garages, barn space or secure driveways that sit unused.

Private storage offers:

  • Lower costs than commercial facilities
  • Flexible terms, often month-to-month
  • Direct communication with the host
  • Sometimes closer to home than commercial options

For hosts, renting out a spare garage or covered space is a practical way to earn from something that would otherwise sit empty.

Preparing your car for storage in Scotland

Scottish winters are harder on cars than most of the UK. Cold, damp conditions and road salt create specific risks.

  • Wash thoroughly. Remove all salt and road grime before storing. Salt left on bodywork and under the car accelerates corrosion.
  • Wax the exterior. A fresh coat of wax protects the paint.
  • Check antifreeze. Even in a garage, temperatures can drop below freezing. Make sure your coolant is rated for Scottish winters.
  • Disconnect the battery. Or use a trickle charger if power is available.
  • Use moisture control. Dehumidifier crystals in the cabin and boot. Edinburgh's damp air finds its way into everything.
  • Release the handbrake. Use wheel chocks instead. The handbrake mechanism can seize in cold, damp conditions.
Road salt is the single biggest enemy of cars stored in Scotland. A thorough underbody wash before storage prevents the kind of hidden corrosion that costs serious money to fix later.
