Insurance Information
What you should know about insurance before you list or book in Canada.
Important Notice
The information on this page is general in nature and does not constitute financial or insurance advice. Insurance regulation in Canada is primarily provincial. StorageFinder is not licensed as an insurance agent, broker, or adjuster in any province and does not provide, arrange, or recommend specific insurance products. You should consider your own circumstances and seek advice from a licensed insurance broker in your province before making insurance decisions. Both Hosts and Storers are responsible for maintaining their own appropriate insurance.
Booking Support, Included With Every Booking
Every booking on StorageFinder includes Booking Support. If damage or theft is verified during your booking period, we may reimburse up to CAD $1,000 of your documented out-of-pocket costs. This is a discretionary goodwill commitment, not insurance.
What it may cover
- Documented repair or replacement costs
- Insurance excess or deductible payments
- Other verified out-of-pocket expenses
What it doesn't cover
- Wear, rust, mould, vermin, or gradual deterioration
- Damage outside the booking period
- Pre-existing damage
- Items not disclosed at the time of booking
- Civil unrest, natural disaster, or force majeure
Booking Support is a discretionary goodwill commitment by StorageFinder. It is not insurance and does not replace your own insurance. StorageFinder may decline any request at its sole discretion. This is not a contract of insurance under any provincial Insurance Act.
For Hosts
As a Host, you should ensure you have adequate insurance to cover your property and any liability that may arise from storing third-party vehicles and equipment on your premises. Consider the following:
- Does your commercial general liability (CGL) or homeowner's liability policy cover visitors and their property on your site?
- Does your property insurance cover land, structures, and improvements used for third-party vehicle storage?
- Notify your insurer that you are earning income from vehicle or RV storage. Most standard home policies exclude business activity
- Ask whether a landlord or business liability policy is more appropriate if you list multiple spaces regularly
- Confirm your policy covers fire, theft, flooding, and vandalism by third parties at the storage location
For Storers (Vehicle Owners)
As a Storer, you should maintain insurance on your vehicle or equipment even while it is in storage. Recommendations include:
- Check whether your comprehensive auto insurance covers theft, fire, and storm damage while the vehicle is stored at a third-party location in Canada
- Confirm with your insurer that the policy applies when the vehicle is kept at a private property that is not your own
- For RVs, motorhomes, or trailers stored for the off-season, ask your insurer about lay-up or storage-specific coverage
- Use the Handover feature to photograph your vehicle's condition on arrival and departure. This supports any insurance claim
- Keep a copy of your insurance documents accessible during the storage period
Recommended Steps
Review your existing insurance policies before listing or booking
Contact your insurer or a licensed broker in your province to confirm coverage for storage activities
Keep all booking confirmations and correspondence as records
Take dated photographs of vehicles at check-in and check-out using the Handover feature
Report any incidents promptly to your insurer and to StorageFinder
