Searching for truck storage is different from hunting for a self-storage unit. You need space wide enough for a prime mover and trailer combination, typically 25 to 26 metres for a B-double. You need a surface that can handle GVM loads without sinking in wet weather. And you need a gate that opens when you actually need it, not just nine to five.

On FindTruckStorage, you search the map and filter by what actually matters: yard dimensions, surface type (hardstand, gravel, sealed), 24-hour access or keypad entry, and whether the host accepts heavy vehicles. Hosts post real dimensions so you know before contact whether your rig will fit. Most listings include photos of the entry gate and yard surface.

Once you have found a yard that looks right, send the host a message through the platform. Tell them what you are parking, what dimensions you are working with, and how long you need the spot. Be upfront about weight and tyre loads if the host mentions surface type in their listing.

Most hosts are working people: farmers with unused hardstand, tradespeople with a big block, small business owners with spare yard space. They understand that trucks do not run nine to five and that early morning drops happen. Mention your access requirements early and most will accommodate. The platform keeps the whole conversation on record.

Once approved, pay the first period to confirm. Stripe handles the payment with bank-level security and your payment details are never seen by the host.

You will receive a digital confirmation along with the host's contact details and access instructions. From there, the Handover takes care of condition records at drop-off and pick-up. No paperwork to argue over. Just a fair transaction between two people who both want it to be simple.

Commercial self-storage facilities were not built with trucks in mind. Low clearances, weight-restricted aprons, awkward turning circles: most just do not work for a B-double or a low loader with plant on it. That is the gap FindTruckStorage was built to fill. Real yards with real space, from people who understand that working vehicles do not keep office hours.

The Practical Guide

What you need to know before you store a truck or trailer

Surface type matters more than people think

A prime mover and trailer combination can weigh 40 to 50 tonnes when loaded. Even unloaded, a prime mover alone sits at 8 to 12 tonnes. That is a lot of pressure on a driveway. An unsealed or clay surface will move in wet weather, potentially bogging your truck or causing drainage issues for the host.

When browsing listings, pay attention to surface type. Look for hardstand (concrete or asphalt), compacted gravel, or sealed surfaces for anything heavier than a light trailer.

Access hours

Most private yards do not have 24/7 automated entry by default. Some hosts use padlocks, some use keypad gates, and some just open when they open. If your operation requires pre-dawn or post-dark access, which is common in transport, confirm this before you book. It is a straightforward conversation and most hosts will either have a solution or tell you honestly that it will not work.

B-double and oversize combinations

Standard truck bays assume a single trailer of roughly 12.5 metres. A B-double runs to 25 to 26 metres and needs significantly more turning room. Check the listed dimensions and, if in doubt, ask the host to confirm the entry gate width and turning radius. If the entry gate is under 5 metres wide, a B-double probably will not make it in comfortably.

Insurance for stored vehicles

Comprehensive truck insurance typically covers a vehicle whether it is operational or stored, but coverage specifics vary. Check your policy's definition of 'in use' versus 'stored' and whether it covers a third-party private yard. If you are storing an unregistered trailer, your options narrow further. A five-minute call to your insurer before you drop off is worthwhile.

What to photograph at drop-off

The Handover is your protection. When you drop the rig, photograph the whole yard entry, the position of the vehicle, any existing damage to the trailer, and the ground surface around the tyres. For trailers carrying goods, photograph the sealed doors. This is the record that protects both sides and it takes two minutes. Do not skip it.

Yard security

Private yards vary in security. Some have CCTV, some have perimeter fencing, some are on working properties with dogs and people around. Ask the host what security is in place and whether the yard is visible from the road. For high-value trailers or equipment, it is reasonable to ask about lighting and fence height. Most hosts will be straight with you about what they have got.

That back paddock you are not using is worth good money.

That back paddock you are not using is worth good money.

If you have a sealed or gravel yard that sits empty between jobs, you have a passive income opportunity. Truck operators actively search for short-term and long-term hardstand that is accessible, secure, and close to their main routes. The demand is there. Listing takes twenty minutes, and you set every condition: who gets in, what is allowed, and what they pay.

Common Questions

Got questions? We have answers.

Can I store a loaded trailer at a private yard?

Most hosts are open to it, but disclose what is on the trailer when you make your request. Hosts have the right to approve or decline any load, and some will have restrictions around certain goods, particularly if they are insured or if there are council conditions on their property. Be upfront and you will get a straight answer.

What surface types are suitable for heavy vehicles?

Hardstand (concrete or sealed asphalt) is ideal for anything over about 15 tonnes. Compacted gravel works well for most single-trailer combinations. Avoid listings with clay or soft soil surfaces unless the listing specifically states it has been engineered for heavy vehicle loads. In wet weather, even a light truck can cause damage to unsuitable surfaces.

How do access hours work for 24/7 transport operations?

Each host sets their own access rules and lists them on their yard. Some have keypad or swipe-card entry and can provide round-the-clock access; others require a host to be present. Filter your search by 24/7 access where available, and if it is not listed, send the host a message before booking. Most will work something out.
