What private storage is best for
Private storage suits household overflow, seasonal items (outdoor furniture, sports gear, camping equipment), business stock or equipment, vehicles, and anyone who wants local, accessible storage without a fixed commercial contract.
It is generally not suited for items requiring climate control: fine art, documents, wine, or electronics sensitive to humidity. For those, a climate-controlled facility is the better choice. Be honest about what your items need before you book.
Security considerations
Security is a primary concern for storage in South Africa. Ask the host about perimeter fencing, electric fencing, CCTV, alarm systems, and whether the property has active security or is in a secure estate. For high-value items, prioritise listings with multiple layers of security.
Gated communities, estates with access control, and properties with 24-hour security presence offer the highest level of protection. Make security a key filter in your search.
Load shedding and power access
If you need power for battery tenders, trickle chargers, or any equipment, ask the host about their load-shedding situation and whether they have backup power (inverter, generator, or solar). Power interruptions can affect items that rely on continuous power to stay in good condition.
Moisture and ventilation
In coastal areas like Durban or Cape Town, humidity can be a concern for stored items. If you are storing timber furniture, books, cardboard boxes, or anything that can warp or develop mould, ask the host about ventilation.
Elevate items off the floor on pallets or shelving, use moisture absorbers, and do not wrap timber furniture in plastic, it traps moisture.
Insurance
Your household contents insurance may extend to items stored off-premises, but coverage limits and exclusions vary. Check your policy with your insurer.
